It is a wonderful time to be a motion picture admirer. For numerous years the only way to see a up-to-the-minute motion picture was to go to the theater. Mysterious Lady - An Austrian armed forces officer (Nagel) falls in love with Garbo, naive that she is a Russian agent. Another contrived plot made serviceable by Garbo herself. Cast includes Greta Garbo, Conrad Nagel, Gustav von Seyffertitz, Albert Pollet, and Edward Connelly. (96 minutes,'28)
Rhapsody in Blue - Hollywood biography of George Gershwin is largely fiction, although comes off better than most other composer biographies, seizing Gershwin's exhilaration for his work, and some of his central conflicts. Inferno - American returns to N.Y. from school in Rome to investigate the gruesome death of his sibling, and finds "sinister moms" wreaking paranormal chaos on both sides of Atlantic. Surreal, hypnotic shocker by Italian terror maestro Argento does not make much sense, but it has a lot of style. Cast includes Leigh McCloskey, Irene Marvel, Sacha Pitoeff, Daria Nicolodi, Eleonora Giorgi, Veronica Lazar, and Alida Valli. (107 minutes,'84)
Basic - While things go awry throughout an armed forces work out, base captain Daly brings in Travolta, the best interrogator he ever had, to question the surviving members of the squad, whose tales do not add up. In fact a whodunit, this movie keeps us guessing, as a good plot should. Cast includes John Travolta, Connie Nielsen, Samuel L. Jackson, Giovanni Ribisi, Tim Daly, Roselyn Sanchez, and Harry Connick.
