Anytime a Hollywood motion picture is released the objective is to make a motion picture that the public loves and that will become a epic hit. Take a fantastic story, throw in a couple of remarkable actors along with some special effects and voila', a huge box office success. But it doesn't always work that way. Sometimes a motion picture will contain everything that you think might make it a success and it still fails at the box office. There is no such thing as a sure thing in Hollywood.

Sing, You Sinners - Wagering Crosby couldn't face accountability, regardless of jabbing his brother MacMurray. Three siblings with different interests have a singing act. Can the other two brothers save the day when the gambling sibling bets on a "sure thing"? Includes Wesley Ruggles, Bing Crosby, Fred MacMurray, Donald O'Connor, Elizabeth Patterson, Ellen Drew, and John Gallaudet. (88 minutes,'38)

The Last Time I Saw Archie - Webb's single try at comedy is less foolish than some of his more earnest films; a shame, since William Bowers' script-based on his own Army experiences had real potential, and Mitchum nicely underplays as the con guy. By the way, the genuine Archie Chamber sued for invasion of privacy. Cast includes Robert Mitchum, Jack Webb, Martha Hyer, France Nuyen, Louis Nye, Richard Arlen, Don Tangles, Joe Flynn, and Robert Strauss. (98 minutes,'61)

Cry the Beloved Country - Moving redo of the'51 film based on Alan Paton's rejoiced novel, in reference to a backwoods pastor (Jones) who, in'46, makes his first ever trip to the city of Johannesburg in search of his wayward child. At the same time well-to-do landowner Harris voyages there to claim the body of his child, who has just been murdered. We see extraordinary work by Jones, Harris, and a largely foreign cast. Not as understated as the first making, however powerful in its own way. Cast includes Richard Harris, James Earl Jones, Charles S. Dutton, and Vusi Kunene. (120 minutes,'95)

Sexy Beast - A retired British hoodlum, living the life in Spain, is visited by a fierce gangster who desires him to work one more heist. Trendy, aggressive, current day gangster's film has first-rate acting containing a special performance by Kingsley as the spiteful perpetrator. Cast includes Ray Winstune, Ben Kingsley, Ian McShane, Cavan Kendall, Julianne White, Alvaro Monje, and James Fox. (88 minutes, 2001)

Fantasies - Amateurish gibberish in regards to Derek's and Hooten's attempts to turn a Greek island into a tourist trap. Shot in'73, while Bo was sixteen. Cast includes Bo Derek, Peter Hooten, Anna Alexiadis, Phaedon Gheorghitis, and Therese Bohlin. (81 minutes,'81)

Slaughter's Big Ripoff - A assassin is still playing games with the Mob in this dull action film. McMahon gives more effort to his role as the mafia boss than it merits. Cast includes Jim Brown, Ed McMahon, Brock Peters, Don Stroud, Gloria Hendry, Dick Anthony Williams, and Art Metrano. (93 minutes,'73)
